"The Girl from Als."
"Alspigen" is a bronze sculpture created by Danish artist Adam Fischer in 1946. The statue was installed in 1951 in front of Sønderborg Town Hall, located on Rådhustorvet in Sønderborg, Denmark. The sculpture depicts a woman holding a basket of apples, symbolizing the fertility and abundance of the island of Als. At her feet are fish, representing the surrounding waters of the island.
Upon its unveiling, "Alspigen" sparked debate among local residents, as some felt the figure did not align with traditional ideals of femininity. Over time, however, the community embraced the statue, and it became a cherished symbol of the region. Today, it is affectionately known as "Alspigen," meaning "The Girl from Als."
A notable tradition associated with "Alspigen" involves local students celebrating their graduation by dancing around the fountain and playfully tossing classmates who achieved top grades into the water. This custom highlights the statue's role as a focal point for community celebrations and its enduring significance in Sønderborg's cultural life.
