Martin med fløjten
MARTIN WITH THE WHISTLE
The bronze sculpture was created by local artist Vibeke Fonnesberg and was unveiled on October 6, 2011.
This is the first and currently the only life-sized sculpture of a former local citizen.
Martin "mæ e' fløjt" (with the whistle) was born in Silkeborg and was originally named Martin Frederik Christian Jørgensen (1884–1976). His mother died early, and his father abandoned the children, leaving Martin and his two siblings to grow up in a poorhouse. Life was harsh, and Martin reportedly got into trouble and was imprisoned several times.
Around 1930, Martin arrived in Sønderborg, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life. He made a living as a scavenger, initially using a horn to signal his rounds with his cart, collecting used items of value. However, the townspeople grew tired of the sound of the horn, and the police persuaded Martin to use a train whistle instead—hence his nickname.
Martin "mæ e' fløjt" was a familiar figure on the streets, known to both young and old. Though he died poor, he was respected for his wisdom and kindness.
