Augustenborg Castle
Augustenborg Castle
The history of Augustenborg Palace begins with Hans the Younger’s five heirs, who each inherited a small duchy upon his death in 1622. Hans’s son Alexander inherited the area around Sønderborg. After Duke Alexander's death in 1627, the small princely state of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg, which had been separated by the regional government, could no longer be divided further. Of his six sons, five inherited the ducal title but had to manage their estates independently. Alexander’s third son, Ernst Günther, acquired several estates and farms on the islands of Ærø and Als and became the first duke of the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenborg line.
Augustenborg Palace is a castle complex located in Augustenborg on the island of Als in Sønderborg Municipality. The palace and the town were named after Duchess Augusta, and the palace gave its name to the ducal lineage of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenborg, which owned the area for several centuries. From 1932 to 2015, the palace was used as a psychiatric hospital and today belongs to the Danish state. In 2016, the Danish Agricultural Agency (formerly known as the Nature Business Authority) established a department at the palace.
